In about a week, a small group of knitters will flock to Peso da Régua, in the Douro region of Portugal, to spend four days immersed in knitting and crafty conversations. A happy crowd coming from Portugal, Finland, Spain, and Brazil will color this landscape with vibrant knits. Designer Maria Gomes (MariaGKnits) organizes and hosts the first of hopefully many exciting events.
The guest designer of this knitting retreat is Veera Välimäki, a talented Finnish knitwear designer known for her recent book Stripes published by Laine. Veera has been publishing her designs on Ravelry since 2009, and her sweaters, shawls, and cardigans are favorites of ravelers. Veera also pairs up with Joji Locatelli in the knitting publication Interpretations, mostly published by Pom Pom.
The beautiful Douro River and vineyards are a special place for relaxed knitting accompanied by inspiring knitters enjoying the food and the landscape in a laid-back atmosphere. As a cultural treat, the group will visit the delightful Port Wine Museum.
The retreat is an exceptional opportunity to learn first-hand about Veera’s creative process and the use of color in her designs. No wonder it sold out in just a few days! Personally, I love to dig into designers’ paths and how they explore their creativity. I can imagine all the potential designers-to-be in that group will be beyond excited about spending a few days in this creative atmosphere.
During four days, there will be time for spontaneous chats about knitting and creative making to spark joy and enthusiasm. Luckily for participants, Veera will offer a special design created for the retreat, in which the fond memories of the retreat experience will remain.
If you’re eager to get away from the hustle and bustle, settle down, and take deep breaths as you take in the beauty of calming landscapes, be sure to follow news about upcoming retreats with fascinating guests, possibly same time next year.
