THE NURSE: INSPIRED BY DENMARK'S INFAMOUS NURSE KILLER

Updated: Aug 25, 2023

Recently, my knitting needles and I embarked on a captivating journey as we delved into the chilling world of "The Nurse," a new Netflix series that will grip your attention like a tightly woven stitch. Inspired by the disturbing true story of Christina Aistrup Hansen, a nurse from Denmark who was charged and convicted of murdering patients, this show provides an adrenaline-fueled ride that is the perfect backdrop for a few days of binge-knitting.

Presented from the perspective of Pernille Kurzman, Christina's former nursing student and the whistleblower who ultimately unraveled her mentor's horrifying secrets, "The Nurse" gives a chilling insight into a world where the person trusted to provide care turns into a monstrous predator. It's a masterfully told narrative that will keep you at the edge of your seat (and maybe make you knit a bit faster than usual).

Histrionic personality disorder on the edge

While the show centers around the horrifying actions of Christina, it also explores her affliction with histrionic personality disorder, illuminating the tragic irony of a caregiver who craved attention to the point of causing harm. Christina is not painted as a one-dimensional villain but rather a deeply flawed individual whose desire for affirmation spiraled into a shocking series of crimes.

One of the standout aspects of "The Nurse" is its ability to maintain suspense throughout, despite viewers potentially knowing the outcome from the outset. The series skillfully dives into Christina's psychological evolution from a seemingly dedicated nurse to a manipulative criminal seeking to play the hero in the hospital’s night shift. The show’s depiction of her unraveling is an exercise in slow-burning tension, which makes for riveting viewing.

"The Nurse" is not just a true crime series but a psychological exploration of a twisted mind, and it manages to draw a delicate line between empathy and horror. It's not for the faint-hearted, but if you enjoy shows that delve deep into their characters' psyche while maintaining a thrilling narrative, this is a must-watch.
